CART BAJA DESIGN CHALLENGE IS ANNOUNCED TO THE WORLD!

So, Cart Baja Design Contest is announced to the world....read the excerpts from the SAE India press release issued this afternoon.

Chennai SAE India Press Meet

Society of Automotive Engineers India (SAE India), Southern Section in association with Satyam Computer Services Limited, a leading global consulting and IT Services Company, is organizing an intercollegiate Engineering Design contest, CART BAJA DESIGN CHALLENGE on September 17-18, 2006 at Crescent Engineering College, Chennai for undergraduate and graduate Engineering students. This contest covers conceptualization, detail design and prototyping.

CART BAJA (pronounced as BAA-HAH) is a part of series of engineering design competitions titled Mini Baja, being held all over the world including US, Brazil, Korea, South Africa and Mexico under the aegis of SAE International.

The contestants have to create a cart using specified material that would carry a predetermined load in one day. The design will be evaluated on Concept, Modeling, Prototyping and Test run. The winners take away attractive cash prizes. There will be special prizes for best aesthetics and best CAD model. More details are available at http://cartbaja.blogspot.com/

All leading engineering institutes in and around Tamil Nadu shall participate in this event.

This contest will provide a platform for young designers to showcase their creativity in conceptualization, CAD capabilities and prototyping skills. This will help the students to develop outstanding and innovative designs in their career. This assumes great importance considering that about 200,000 design engineering services jobs will be created in the coming years.

SAE India Southern Section is conducting this event to simulate real world engineering design projects and their related challenges as a part of its commitment to engineering student community in this region.

Satyam Computer Services, a leading global IT services provider, is joining hands with SAE India to encourage the budding talent to get into design work. Speaking about the contest, Mr. Subu D Subramanian, Director & Senior Vice President, Satyam Computer Services Limited, said, “This is an exciting contest and assumes great significance in view of the increasing high end engineering design work being outsourced to India especially in aerospace and automotive domains. Satyam has decided to encourage our budding talents in the country to get into core engineering design work and not just IT alone and events like this would be a stepping stone for them.”

HERE COME THE CONTEST DETAILS

Slightly long but important, so read on:

The Competition

A cart is to be designed and made with the given material (plastic sheet, adhesive and wheels). It should be able to carry a given load. The cart will be placed on a ramp followed by a flat surface. The cart should travel maximum distance without capsizing, mechanical failure or damage. The model should be made considering manufacturability and cost.

The Exciting Bit

The event consists of four stages:

1. CONCEPT : A concept sketch and design calculations to be made to arrive at the basic dimensions and prediction of distance traveled. The load to be carried, details of the ramp and properties of the materials will be supplied on the day of the contest.

2. MODELLING: An assembly model has to be generated in CAD software. The model has to be generated within the given time. This will be done on first day.

3. MANUFACTURING: A prototype has to be built as per the model. The required tools and materials for building the cart will be provided by the organizers. This will be done on first day.

4. TEST RUN: The prototype is to be tested in this session. The cart is placed on a ramp and is allowed to run freely. Here the various parameters are checked for and the prize winners are finalized. This will be done on second day.

Rules and Regulations: (Well, this piece is coming below the Exciting Bit, but nevertheless as important so please be mindful)

INVITATION [in-vi-tey-shuh n]

Who does not get excited about a car or an airplane? When we are young, we play toy cars. By preteens we start noticing the logos and the brands. In the teens we talk about engines and turning radius and in the late teens we start talking about the styling. Barely out of the teens, we look at the pricing of different models. Our romance with cars continue all through our life.

In this process, a very serious race happens all the time. That between the customer and the designer. Design engineers constantly raise the bar by bringing in new innovations which change the customer experience, and the customers constantly elevate themselves in demanding for more. The real winner in this race is the car or the airplane which gets better and better in the whole deal.

The contest to create the real winner is here. The blue banner shown in the previous post should be on your college notice boards anytime now.

The last date for registration is 9 September, 2006. Oil up your dream engines.
